This paper explains the basics of the Initial Distribution System Evaluation (IDSE) and the options utilities have for complying with the IDSE requirements. Specifically addressing the option of system specific studies, a distribution system modeling approach that combines both hydraulic and water quality models will be discussed. An example of a full-scale demonstration of an integrated hydraulic and water quality model to predict disinfection byproduct formation in the distribution system of a medium-sized utility is presented. Includes 3 references, tables, figures.
