Accurately assessing raw water quality is important for maximizing the performance of both newand existing treatment facilities. For new facilities a comprehensive evaluation of raw waterquality allows proper selection of treatment processes and establishes bounds on operatingconditions. In existing facilities, plant performance can be optimized and the need for upgradingand rehabilitation of processes can be identified. In this paper this approach is implemented fora new 70-mgd facility serving the Metropolitan area of Salt Lake City. Includes reference, tables, figures.
