Full Description

Water reuse is being actively investigated as a potential future water supply option within the framework of the regional water resource planning effort currently underway by the Central Puget Sound Regional Water Suppliers' Forum (Forum). The Forum is a voluntary public water supply planning organization jointly comprised of representatives from public water systems and local governments located within King, Pierce, and Snohomish Counties in Washington. The members of the Forum represent utilities that provide water to most of the three-county area population, which has experienced tremendous growth in the past two decades. Creation of the Forum was due in part to the recognized need for collaborative efforts to address the region's water needs associated with both the growing population and aquatic habitat. To help meet this objective, the Forum has identified various alternative future water supplies that may supplement, or relax the demand upon, existing potable water sources. In exploring water reuse as one such option, the Forum has collected data pertaining to current and planned reuse projects within the three counties, analyzed the various drivers and constraints related to reuse implementation, and evaluated the potential for reclaimed water use in the Central Puget Sound region. Reuse projects representing approximately 25 mgd have been identified that are either in the design/planning stages or that could be in the near future. Use of this water in various non-potable and indirect potable applications may reduce demands exerted upon existing water supplies, and aid in meeting environmental and fisheries needs associated with water resources in the Central Puget Sound. The findings pertaining to water reuse have been compiled in a technical memorandum entitled "Water Reuse Status for Central Puget Sound Region - Final Technical Memorandum" (dated April 17, 2001), and summarized in a comprehensive document entitled the 2001 Regional Water Supply Outlook (dated July 2001). This paper is composed of text and tables derived from these Forum products. Includes tables.
