In 1999, Florida added requirements for monitoring the protozoan pathogens, Giardia and Cryptosporidium, to the state's rules governing water reuse. This paper describes Florida's monitoring requirements and monitoring results obtained through September 2001. Data for these pathogens from other domestic wastewater treatment facilities and for other waters also are presented. Florida's monitoring data reveal that a number of water reclamation facilities that provide filtration and high-level disinfection produce reclaimed water that contain relatively high concentrations of the protozoan pathogens. This is particularly true for Giardia. Includes 24 references, tables, figures.
